The Pope

The Pope is visiting the US this week. What do you know about the Pope and what would you like to learn about him? (not just this Pope -- but the office over time)

Your post should contain 3-4 sentences of thought-provoking prose.

I want to know why this trip is such a huge deal. Are the Baptist and the Mormons excited about the Pope coming? Why is it such a big event in history? When was the last time the Pope was in America? Was the security so tight back then too?

I know that the pope is the leader of the Catholic church. He lives in the Vatican. I also know that there has been a new pope in the last few years. I would like to know where the role of the pope originated. How many popes have there been? How do they decide who will be the pope?

I know that the Pope is the head of the Cathoic group of Christians. He is right under God in his power. I know that this is his first visit to the US, and I want to know why he has not been before. I also know that every year there is a ceremony every year where the Pope goes in a room by himself and God lights two candles. The Pope then comes out with the candles and the people cheer. I know the Pope lives in the Vatican.

Right now, I don’t know much about the Pope. I know that he is the head of the Catholic Church, and lives in Vatican City. I also know that the Pope is paying a visit to New York City and Washington D.C. this week. I also know that he has a specially engraved white apple ipod!

I know that the Pope is the supreme leader of the Catholic diocese. I know that his name is Benedict. I want to know what the pope actually does... is he just a symbol? What kind of things are demanded of the pope?

I am interested in knowing where the Pope will be staying if thats possible. I know he's in New York and Washington but where does the Pope stay in these cities? What is he going to; in addition to; visiting sites in the cities? I also know that the current Pope is Polish. I know that the Pope is Catholic. Is the Pope a vegetarian?

(I forgot to post questions before)

Some questions I have are- What does a person have to do to become a pope? What are some of the Pope's duties?

I know the pope is always old. And they burn the white smoke up the chimney of the Vatican once they have found a new pope. I want to know what it takes to become the Pope. Also who choices the pope?

I know that the Pope is Roman Cathoic, and his name is Pope Benedict XVI. I would like to know what some advantages are of being the pope. Also, can anyone be Pope? What qualities to have to have to be Pope?

I know that the pope is Roman Catholic and will be 81 this year. He is in the Vatican. I want to learn why he was chosen as the new pope after John Paul. Also, was he a cardinal? Can you be Pope if you are from America? Where do you have to be from?

I know that the current pope's name is Pope Benedict XVI. The pope is the leader of Catholicism in the Vatican City in Italy. That's pretty much all I know about the Pope

1. What is required to achieve papal status?

2. What exactly does the Pope do?

I know that the pope is catholic, and is currently Pope Benedict XVI. The previous pope was Pope John Paul II. The popes normally reside in Vatican City, Rome. I also know that due to previous assassination attempts (on Pope John Paul II), it's common for the pope to ride around in a "pope-mobile" when visiting foreign countries. The Pope-mobile has the pope seated up high, where everybody can see him, but he's surrounded by bullet proof glass.
I also know that to decide on the next Pope (the pope retires from his position when he dies), the cardinals all hold a meeting. They cast ballots for people they believe should become pope, and the winner is the one that receives 2/3 +1 of the votes. The cardinals do this in a back room of the Vatican, and it usually takes multiple elections to finally decide on a pope. When a casting is done, the ballots are burned. If it was an unsuccessful vote, black smoke is emitted from the chimney (mixed the ballots with straw?). However, if a pope has been decided on, white smoke is emitted. The new pope will have his name changed to that of a Saint.
The Pope commonly wears white robes, with a white hat (a tall hat curved at the top), and a thin black staff with a crucifix on the top.
The pope is fluent in multiple languages (since Christianity spreads across the world). The pope also encourages the Christian community to stand for their beliefs (like opposition to stem-cell research).

As a catholic I could keep on going, but I think I've already overshot it.

1. When was the idea of a pope established?
2. Has there ever been a period without a pope (after the first pope)?
3. How are the names of the popes decided on?

I don't really know that much about the Pope. I do know that the pope leads the Catholic church. I also know that there was recently a new pope because the old one passed away. I want to know how becoming the Pope affects the everyday life of the person chosen.

The Pope is the head of the Roman Catholic church who leads prayer and mass, and is also a one of the world’s largest political figures. Popes of the past have used their influence to inspire crusades and to fight communism. The current Pope, Pope Benedict the XIV succeeded Pope John Paul II after Pope John Paul’s death. I am interested in learning more about the Popes political exploits and accomplishments.

To be honest i really only know that the Pope has to do with the Catholic religion. I want to know why the Pope doesnt make more trips to the USA. Is there a reason why he doesnt visit the USA that often? Why are all the Popes so old and not young so they can serve for a longer time?

I really only know about the Pope that he is the leader of a Catholic church, but that is about it. I would like to learn about where he is staying while he visits here, and if that information is confidential, because this trip has a lot of hype around it. I also would like to know what other significant places he has visited that was a big deal?
