I learned about the Middle Ages in 7th grade, by Mr. Shy who gave very clear, straightforeward lectures, and I remember most of what he taught us. I remember the Black Death and was very interested by it. I would like to know as much as possible about the Black Death. Also, I know that the Church was very powerful in the Middle Ages, because most people could not read, the Chruch interpreted the Bible the way that would be most beneficial to them. I would also like to learn more about this subject.

During the Middle Ages, the Church prevailed over most things. The Church was incorporated into literature, and other cultural aspects of Europe. During the Middle Ages, there was a Feudal system. There were lords and the lower working class whose jobs mainly delt with agriculture. Agriculture was a big development and focus during the Middle Ages. I know that the Renaissance and Reformation followed the Middle Ages, and there was something called the Black Death-I would like to learn more about this. Also, I may be wrong, but I think the Bubonic plague was during the Middle Ages as well. The Middle Ages started in the 400's.

I would like to know about to what extent the Church was involved in government and every day life. How did the Middle Ages end? What were the effects and aftermaths of the Middle Ages?

I know that the Church had a very important role in people's lives during the Middle ages. I also know that the Black Death and the Crusades happened during this time. Other than that, I really don't know much about the Middle Ages and would like to learn more

Some questions I have: What were some ways that the church used to increase its power? Also, what sort of role did the vikings play?

I would like to learn about the Rennaisance and the lifestyles during that period. I am also very interested in learning more about the Black Death (since I too, learned about it in 7th grade). I would also like to learn about France and England. I want to see what life was like then in Europe, specifically in England and France. Finally, I am interested in learning about the Theatre during the time and the arts in general.

The middle Ages was a time void of technological and artistic development. It experiences the worst plagues in history, mainly the Black Death (Bubonic Plague). It was an age known the prevalence of bloody wars, such as the hundred year war, the crusades, and the attacks of barbarians. The most development was seen after the 11th century. It was during this century that one of the greatest developments for England came. It was after the invasion of William the Conquer in 1066, that the implementation of the Feudal System took place. The middle ages were a time when the church and Christianity were at the peak of their power. The middle ages ended with the decomposition of the Feudal System, the formation new sects of Christianity, and the rebirth of Roman and Greek values.

I would like to learn more about the dynamics surrounding many of Europe’s Wars.

From 7th grade, I have a basic understanding of the Middle ages. Basically, each culture had their own unique product(s), and there was constant trade in between these cultures (England, Byzantium, Russia, etc.). Also, I know the crusades took place during the middle ages. I would like to learn more about the Crusades, and I would also like to learn more about the specific cultures (excluding Russia, we learned about them).

I vaguely remember learning about the Middle Ages in 6th grade, but I don't remember much from that. I know the Dark Ages got their name mainly from the fact that we don't know much about the time.

I would like to know what religions other than Christianity were present at the time. How were non-Christians treated? Was there religious tolerance?

As a student of Mr. Shy's in seventh grade, I gained a basic understanding of the middle ages. I know that during this period of time, there's a thing called "The Dark Ages". The Dark Ages was the name that was given to the period of time of which we knew very little. At first a synonym for The Middle Ages, but now we have learned a lot more about parts of the middle ages. Now the term The Dark Ages is redueced to a smaller portian of time. I also know about The Black Death. It was a plauge that wiped out much of the human population in Europe. This disease was spread by rats. I also know a lot about Joan of Arc. She was a french woman who led the French army agaisnt the english king because she had a vision of God telling her to. She was around in the 15th century and is now a saint and a french national hero. She was later burned at the stake. I know that the church was very powerful and was a major part of many people's lives. I also learned of the Hundered Years' War while doing a project in French. It was a war against the French and the English who both wanted control of France. It technecally happened for over 100 years, but 100 sounds much nicer. I know that England and France had been having some problems getting along before, so war seemed inevitable. I also know that Joan of Arc was part of the Hunderd Years' War and it went on for around 20 years after she died. The 100 year war took place in France and it was near the very end of the Middle ages. I also know that Loire Valley in France is the home of Tours, a vital city for learning in the Middle Ages. I also know about William, Duke of Normandd, King Harold and the Battle of Hastings. I would like to learn more about the Hundred Years' War because it is an interesting and very important detail to French and English history.

I didn't really remember a lot of things about the Middle Ages that I learned in 7th grade.
I know there were a lot of travelers such as Genghis Khan and the Black Death.

I know that the Black Death, in the 14th century, spread on rats through the rat flea and on rats and humans.

I would like to know more about how people in the Middle Ages lived.

I don't really remember much about the Middle ages, but I do remember a little about the spread of the Black Death. It spread so quickly because of all the new trade routes that had been developed between different countries, so it made it much easier for the disease to spread on the rats. People were also very superstitious and they thought that the Black Plague was a punishment sent from God because they had misbehaved. In this case the people often whipped themselves as a sign to God that they knew they had been bad, so they didn't need to die from the plague instead they would punish themselves.

I would like to learn more about Charlemagne and his attempt to become literate

I do not know very much about the Middle Ages. I know that it is a period in western European history and some people call it the "Dark Age", but that's about it. What I would like to learn about is the way of life during the Middle Ages and how it differs from today's society. I would also like to know about any technology that they had.

I don’t know much about the middle ages, other than the classic knights, castle, and dungeons. I would like to know more about the middle ages technology. Also I would like to know more about the economics of the middle ages.

I hardly know a thing about the middle ages and what went on during the time period but I know that there was something called the black death.I also do know that the French were a powerhouse, and I was curious how it got to be that way. I would also like to learn more about the War of Roses because i have never heard about it before. The final thing that i would like to learn about is more in depth about the black death, because I know it was a plague and that's about it.

Reading for Monday, April 28

Many things in the reading interested me-

First, the Vikings and their ships. This was a diagram of the rigging (http://vikingships.tripod.com/images/rigging1a.jpg) from a website that makes scale models of viking ships.

Second, the Bayeux tapestry that was created entirely by women. This image (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/domesday/images/bayeux-cooks.jpg) from the national archives of the UK showed the detail up close.

I also found another map of the land divisions during the Carolingian Empire. (http://academic.udayton.edu/williamschuerman/Carolingian_Empire.jpg)

This is the Bayeux, a tapestry that depicts the battle of Hastings in 1066. This depicts the battle that took place between William the Conqueror and King Harold. Harold’s death is depicted on the tapestry, he was shot in the eye with an arrow and then later slashed to pieces. http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://rubens.anu.edu.au/htdocs/laserdisk/0214/21422.JPG&imgrefurl=http://rubens.anu.edu.au/htdocs/bytype/textiles/bayeux/&h=1000&w=1280&sz=326&hl=en&start=5&sig2=cIR25MKkoaPgpGjSf9TzVw&um=1&tbnid=rV2N5kehVMcy3M:&tbnh=117&tbnw=150&ei=8D0WSIPoOJiCiAGYiIybDw&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dthe%2Bbayeux%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26rls%3Dcom.microsoft:dv-MV%26sa%3DN ( really big link)

Monday Night's Homework:

I had a few questions. I wanted to know more about how Charles Martel stopped Islamic expansion through Europe. I also wanted to know what it was like during the Carolingian Empire. Was it like the Roman Empire? What was it like for the people? Lastly I wanted to know about hte Vikings and their background. How are they governed and how do they live? Do we even know a lot about them?

The reading mentioned that people lived in "manors". I was interested in what the manors consisted of and what they looked like.

I found this link that explains what manors were:
http://www.learner.org/interactives/middleages/feudal.html

And I found this link that shows a map of the area around a manor:

If they language the most everyone spoke was Latin, then when did other languages come into play? What were those first languages coming from Latin? What caused the change in language?

Monday Night's Homework:

After the reading, I one of the questions I had was, "Did the Vikings observe any specific religion?" I found this article on the BBC site. It was written by Gareth Williams. I couldn't find who that is, but I figure it is probably fairly reliable since it's on the BBC site. It explains the religion that the Vikings observed (they were Pagan). One thing that I found interesting was that they probably didn't attack monasteries because they were against Christianity. It was more because the monasteries were wealthy and not protected well, making them an easy target. Along the right side of this site, there are a lot of interesting links. There is a Viking game, and an article about how the Vikings might have used an early form of the telescope.

From there, I found a virtual tour of a Viking age farm, that was found in the 1970's in Yorkshire. Once you get it running, it is really cool. The link to it is below.
