Renaissance Posting In Class

Please post at least three sentences of your thoughts/questions. If you can add a link, great -- but I'm not expecting that, given that you are doing the reading in class.

The first thing that struck me was the mention of a colony on Greenland. Where did that come from?

Wikipedia teld me that Greenland was settled in the 980's, by people from Iceland and Norway. They're the people that named it Greenland ("because people will be eager to go there").

Cutting down trees and cattle raising changed the climate of Greenland (making it warmer). However, it got back to what's close to it's original state in the 14th and 15th century ice age.

Our friend Jared Diamond claims that 5 factors contributed to the fall of this colony. Environmental damage, climate change, hostile neighbors, loss of contact and support from Europe, and the lack to adapt to the cold environment.

So the climate change not only affected the spread of the Black Death, it also helped wipe out the Norse people in Greenland.

In the reading, it mentioned how Botticelli turned to painting "biblical subjects". I was wondering who/what these biblical subjects were so I went to

and saw a picture of Angelic-looking people. The painting was called "Madonna and Child". They are reading a book and there are halos around them. There were more pictures of Jesus and Mary also.

I wanted to find a picture of Medici villa. Here is one.

I wanted to find some paintings Botticelli painted before he painted biblical figures. Here is one.

I also wanted to find more about Bottcelli. I found here that he "was an Italian painter of the Florentine school during the Early Renaissance (Quattrocento). Less than a hundred years later, this movement, under the patronage of Lorenzo de' Medici, was characterized by Giorgio Vasari as a "golden age" .... The Birth of Venus (painting above) and Primavera rank now among the most familiar masterpieces of Florentine art."

I really liked this reading. There were a bunch of interesting people like the Medici in Florence and Croesus(the richest man in the world).I looked up Medici and found this wikipedia site which explains more about the powerful family. I also thought it was interesting the chivalry won wars. I never knew guys were that willing to die. I was also wondering about the Bohemian Forest and what it was. I found this site about it and it's not what I thought it was. But it's a forest area that still exists.

The reading mentions that there were no more plagues as bad as the one in the 14th century. Where the plagues what did still continue of the same type of plague or was it different dieses? Also when did the people recover from the first plague?
Also who or what were the Thule Inuit Raiders?
What made humanism go away for the medieval ages, and come back for the renaissances?

In the reading, Christianity was mentioned many times. What were other religions prevalent in the Middle Ages? How were the people of those religions treated? During the Crusades and Middle Ages, the Christians were fighting Muslims, and the Jews were being exiled again. Did that lead to tension between Christians and the people of other religions?

In the reading, it mentioned Thule Inuit raiders. I was wondering what these were and where they were. I also wanted to know more about The Church of San Lorenzo. I found a website that tells about it. Last, I was interested in learning what realism was. I found a wikipedia article that tells about it.

I thought it was interesting to hear about the changes in architecture in the Renaissance, such as the more open churches and how people could see the alter more easily. I would like to know more facts about the changes in architecture.

Also, the book said it wasn't The Renaissance, it was the Renaissance. It said there was about one every century. I would like to know about the other renaissances and how they compare to this one.

While reading I cam across Botticelli ,and some of his paitnting. Most of his paintings were of erotica, and then he suddenly changed to biblical pictures. Wouldn't the church and a lot of the people frown upon him and his sudden switch form good to bad? Also what made him change to this new style? Maybe the church forced him to or maybe even the government.

When reading about Botticelli, I was wondering what caused him to shift from paintings like the Birth of Venus to more religious paintings. The change in rulers must have been a part of it- did Botticelli paint what would bring money in, or what he wanted to?

It was also interesting to see how the reading portrayed Prince Henry. In elementary school, I learned about him as a benevolent prince who was very important in exploration, even if he stayed in Portugal. The reading seemed to describe him as someone obsessed with his own importance and desparate for money- even resorting to slaves and a soap monopoly. I was really interested in the fact that he had to resort to a soap monopoly (this website gives a little more information about it) Apparently Prince Henry also had a monopoly on tuna fish, dyes, and coral.

I thought that it was interesting how it stated in the reading that Botticelli turned in his work to begin the painting of Biblical themes, so me being Christian, I was curious what biblical themes that he painted on. This is a site that I found with a lot of his religious paintings.

I was interested in humanism. I was wondering if it was the same type of humanism as it was in Greece because it mentions that they looked to the Greeks and Romans as their instructors. But I was wondering if there were any difference between the two humanism styles of learning. The reading mentioned that they went through the bible with a fine tooth comb to pick out the little imperfections and mistranslations.

I thought that Thule Inuit raiders were interesting because they destroyed the Norse Colony. However the reading didn't really help me understand why they did this. I was also unsure, at first, what exactly the Norse Colony was, so I looked it up, and learned:

That a colony was established in Greenland in around 1000 but the colony could not succeed. (Because the Thule Inuit raiders destroyed it).

I was also wondering why chivalry couldn't make men good but it could win wars. Does this mean that chivalry was a harmful thing? That was unclear to me.

1. The reading mentioned chivalry, Wikipedia describes 3 main traits of chivalry: Duties to countrymen and fellow Christians: this contains virtues such as mercy, courage, valor, fairness, protection of the weak and the poor, and in the servant-hood of the knight to his lord. This also brings with it the idea of being willing to give one’s life for another’s; whether he would be giving his life for a poor man or his lord.
2. Duties to God: this would contain being faithful to God, protecting the innocent, being faithful to the church, being the champion of good against evil, being generous and obeying God above the feudal lord.
3. Duties to women: this is probably the most familiar aspect of chivalry. This would contain what is often called courtly love, the idea that the knight is to serve a lady, and after her all other ladies. Most especially in this category is a general gentleness and graciousness to all women.
